Lloyds Register (LR), is the founder of ship classification.  LR assists, appraises and approves design, then inspects the construction of vessels and performs periodic surveys throughout a vessel's life. By this means a person commissioning a boat may be assured of a quality build to recognised standards.  

The LR 'fleet' covers all ship types totaling some 100 million gross tons.  LR is recognised by governments and organisations throughout the world.  LR's inspection and certification services include engineering projects such as power generation through to control software.
